I like the Trompowsky Opening (1.d4 Nf6 2. Bg5) because it puts Black in an enigmatic situation from move 2. Is that 2. Bg5 part of White’s development, or is it aiming to double my pawns? (In the course, you’ll see that this potential pawn doubling depends on Black’s move 2; sometimes we double, sometimes we don’t.)

That little tension between our bishop and their knight, combined with the fact that we don’t care if Black is an expert in the King’s Indian, Nimzo-Indian, or any other Indian defense because we won’t let them transpose into it, makes the Trompowsky a very interesting, practical opening that doesn’t resemble any other, and creates problems for Black from quite early on. And on top of that, our opponents will rarely face it, and often won’t be well-prepared against it.
